C&D Dynasty UPS12-490MR Battery - 12V 141Ah High Rate Max AGM

This part is retired by C&D. C&D names the UPS12-495PLP Pure Lead Plus as the replacement; we supply the UPS12-490MR while inventory holds.
The UPS12-490MR is a 12V, 141Ah top-terminal AGM sized for the first fifteen minutes of a UPS discharge. The 490 in the part number is watts per cell at the 15-minute rate to 1.67 VPC. Its amp-hour rating is 141, at the 20-hour rate. C&D sold this cell into data center, switchgear and process-control strings under the Dynasty brand for the better part of two decades, and thousands are still on float today. This is the page for matching an existing string. For a new build, the 495PLP is the current part.

Warranty

Warranty. C&D's term on the UPS High Rate Max series is 3 years at 25°C (77°F), under Form 41-9027. Terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.

Replacing It With the UPS12-495PLP

C&D's engineering letter of 21 November 2022, signed by the Director of VRLA Product Development, confirms that Pure Lead Plus units of equivalent size and capacity are interchangeable on an existing MR string. The 495PLP is the named successor to the 490MR on both C&D's retired-products table and that letter, and we stock it.
C&D UPS12-495PLP Pure Lead Plus - the named replacementSame 141Ah class, and C&D warrants the PLP for 5 years against the MR's 3. In stock and not retired.
On dropping a PLP into an existing MR string. In C&D's words, where a new PLP is dropped into an existing MR string, "both the warranty and life expectancy of this new battery will be determined by the existing string and not the brand new PLP battery." Add one 495PLP to a five-year-old MR string and the new battery ages to that string. Replace the string as a set for the PLP term to apply.

Why the High Rate Max Cell Was Built This Way

Low-calcium long-life alloy
C&D's grid alloy runs the lowest calcium content in the industry, which slows grid growth and gassing. Those are the two failure modes that end a float battery.
Fixed-orifice double-side pasting
Active material applied to both faces of the grid to a controlled thickness, so cell-to-cell capacity stays uniform across a string instead of drifting apart.
Tuned for the 15-minute rate
443 watts per cell at 15 minutes to 1.75 VPC, 655 at 5 minutes. That is the discharge profile a UPS ride-through draws.
  • Up to a 10-year design life on float at 77°F, and roughly 300 cycles at 100% depth of discharge in cycle service.
  • UL recognized and IATA approved for air freight as a non-spillable battery.
  • 2.3 milliohm internal resistance and 5,000 amps short-circuit current. Both are baseline figures for IEEE 1188 trending.

Where This Battery Is Used

  • Data center and colocation UPS strings. The 15-minute ride-through carries the load to generator transfer.
  • Network operations centers and internet housing sites, where the string is the last thing between the rack and a hard drop.
  • Industrial process control - orderly-shutdown power for lines that cost more to restart than to hold up.
  • Power generation plants and switchgear rooms - control and tripping power on a maintained float charge.
  • Hospitals and medical facilities - code-driven backup that gets inspected and load-tested on a schedule.

Ordering and Freight

Minimum order is 4 units. At 100 lbs each these move by LTL freight to a commercial address; a residential or limited-access delivery adds $100 for the liftgate and access charge the carrier bills us. Because the MR line is retired, availability moves - send the quantity, your delivery ZIP, your requested-by date and the cabinet's average ambient, and a specialist comes back within 24 to 48 hours with current MR availability and the 495PLP alternative priced side by side, with the warranty term for whichever you order.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the UPS12-490MR discontinued, and can I still buy one?

C&D has retired the UPS High Rate Max line - the UPS12-490MR appears on C&D's own retired-products table with the UPS12-495PLP named as its official replacement. Distributor inventory outlives production, so we still supply the MR while it holds. Availability and lead time move week to week on a retired line, so ask for a current quote.

Does the 490 in UPS12-490MR mean 490 amp hours?

No. The 490 is watts per cell at the 15-minute rate to 1.67 volts per cell. The actual capacity is 141 amp hours at the 20-hour rate. If you are sizing against an amp-hour figure you are off by more than a factor of three.

What is the difference between the UPS12-490MR and the UPS12-540MR?

They share a case - same 13.57 by 6.80 by 10.93 inch footprint and the same 100 lb weight - and the difference is in the plates. The 540MR is rated 149Ah and 537 W/cell against the 490MR's 141Ah and 488. If your string is spec'd on watts, they are not interchangeable; if it is spec'd on footprint, they will both fit and you should match the watts.

Can I put a UPS12-495PLP into my existing MR string?

Yes - C&D confirms in writing that equivalent-capacity PLP and MR units are interchangeable on the same string. But read C&D's own condition first: the new battery's warranty and life expectancy are governed by the string it joins, not by the PLP's own terms. A single PLP in an aged MR string ages with that string. If you want the 495PLP's 5-year term to mean something, replace the set.

What is the real difference between the MR and the 495PLP?

Same footprint and the same capacity class. The PLP uses pure lead rather than lead-calcium grids, which corrode more slowly on float, and C&D rates it at a 5-year standard warranty at 30°C against the MR's 3 years at 25°C. Specify the PLP on a new string. For a partial replacement, see the string caveat above.

How is the terminal torqued?

Top terminal with a threaded insert taking a 1/4-20 UNC bolt, torqued to 110 in-lbs (12.4 Nm). Under-torque runs hot at the connection and shows up as a rising ohmic reading long before it shows up as a failure; over-torque strips the insert. Use a torque wrench set to that value.

What should my IEEE 1188 baseline readings look like?

C&D publishes 0.0023 ohms internal resistance and 5,000 A short-circuit current for this cell. Take your baseline ohmic readings at installation and trend against them; the absolute number matters less than the drift. C&D's own maintenance guidance points to IEEE Standard 1188 and Dynasty periodic maintenance instructions 41-7546.

Why is there a four-unit minimum order?

Each battery is 100 lbs and ships freight, so a single-unit shipment costs close to what four cost. The minimum keeps per-unit freight sane, and UPS strings get built in multiples anyway.
