How to pick the right inverter
An inverter is the bridge between your battery and the device you want to power. Pick the wrong one and you'll either waste 15–20% of your battery's energy as heat, damage the device, or trip the inverter into shutdown at the worst possible moment. Three questions decide the right inverter for the job.
What's the load wattage, including startup surge? Most appliances pull more current the moment they switch on than they do running. A 600W mini-fridge can pull 1,000–1,200W for the first second the compressor kicks in. Size the inverter for the surge, not the running watts — usually 2× the continuous rating. Pure sine wave, or modified sine wave? Pure sine wave puts out the same clean AC waveform you get from a wall outlet — required for anything with a microprocessor, a motor with electronic speed control, or sensitive audio gear. Modified sine wave is a stepped approximation — cheaper, and fine for resistive loads like lights, heaters, and basic tools. If you don't know which your device needs, get pure sine; the cost difference is small, and the damage from running a microprocessor on modified sine isn't.
12V, 24V, or something bigger? 12V is the default for most cars, RVs, boats, and small off-grid setups. 24V matters once the load runs over 1,500W continuous, where current draw on a 12V system makes cable losses a real problem. Modified Sine Wave
Power inverters come in all shapes and sizes, but just knowing the wattage and voltage output is not enough when dealing with sensitive electrical equipment. When dealing with sensitive electrical equipment it is is extremely important to know what type of sine wave is generated during converting of DC to AC from battery power. Typically, most popular power inverters on the market are designed to simply make the transfer from one volt amount to another voltage yet in-between this process there are complicated frequencies of sine waves generated - the most common being a modified square wave or modified sine.The modified sine wave type is best suited for use by small consumer electronic devices like laptops, personal tablets or on the go cell phone charging. Pure Sine Wave
Pure sine wave or perfect wave inverters are designed for converting DC to AC voltage using a filtering process to produce a smooth and consistent flow of power. The transfer from direct current to alternating current will typically result in what is called a modified wave or square wave which is not the optimum desired wave type for important electronic appliance usage.A few common applications that require pure sine wave inverters are medical equipment, electronics that are microprocessor controlled, and digital clocks. Most other smaller or simple devices such as cell phone or laptop chargers do not carry a need for such scrutinized filtering of the actual sine wave in order to perform their task. These power inverters will come with the same wattage and voltage capabilities as modified sine wave units as seen below. Please keep in mind that it is important to carefully evaluate the total wattage required of your applications that you plan to hook to your inverter prior to purchase.
