Is the UPS12-400MR discontinued, and can I still buy one?
C&D has retired the UPS High Rate Max line - the UPS12-400MR appears on C&D's own retired-products table with the UPS12-405PLP named as its official replacement. Distributor inventory outlives production, so we still supply the MR while it holds. Availability and lead time move week to week on a retired line, so ask for a current quote.
Does the 400 in UPS12-400MR mean 400 amp hours?
No, and this is the single most common mistake on this part. The 400 is watts per cell at the 15-minute rate to 1.67 volts per cell. The actual capacity is 103 amp hours at the 20-hour rate. If you are sizing against an amp-hour figure you are off by a factor of four - and if you arrived here searching for a 12V 400Ah battery, this is not that battery.
Can I put a UPS12-405PLP into my existing MR string?
Yes - C&D confirms in writing that equivalent-capacity PLP and MR units are interchangeable on the same string. But read C&D's own condition first: the new battery's warranty and life expectancy are governed by the string it joins, not by the PLP's own terms. A single PLP in an aged MR string ages with that string. If you want the 405PLP's 5-year term to mean something, replace the set.
What is the real difference between the MR and the 405PLP?
Same footprint and the same capacity class. The PLP uses pure lead rather than lead-calcium grids, which corrode more slowly on float, and C&D rates it at a 5-year standard warranty at 30°C against the MR's 3 years at 25°C. Specify the PLP on a new string. For a partial replacement, see the string caveat above.
How is the terminal torqued?
Top terminal with a threaded insert taking a 1/4-20 UNC bolt, torqued to 110 in-lbs (12.4 Nm). Under-torque runs hot at the connection and shows up as a rising ohmic reading long before it shows up as a failure; over-torque strips the insert. Use a torque wrench set to that value.
What should my IEEE 1188 baseline readings look like?
C&D publishes 0.0025 ohms internal resistance and 5,100 A short-circuit current for this cell. Take your baseline ohmic readings at installation and trend against them; the absolute number matters less than the drift. C&D's own maintenance guidance points to IEEE Standard 1188 and Dynasty periodic maintenance instructions 41-7546.
