The SAM-800-12 turns a 12 volt battery into 800 watts of household AC for under three pounds of hardware. It is the step where the SAM series outgrows the dash socket: at full output it pulls around 80 amps, so it bolts to the battery and rewards you with enough capacity for a TV, a laptop and a blender at the same time. Can I run it from a cigarette-lighter socket?

No. At 800 watts the inverter draws roughly 80 amps, and vehicle accessory sockets are fused at 10 to 15 amps. Connect the nut-and-bolt terminals directly to the battery with short, heavy-gauge cable. The smaller SAM-450-12 is the largest model in the series that still ships with a lighter plug.

What cabling does an 80 amp draw need?

Short runs of 4 AWG or heavier, with an external fuse near the battery. Internally the inverter already carries three 35 amp fuses. Samlex's DC-1000-KIT 100 amp installation kit is the matched cable-and-fuse package for this model.

Will it run a TV and a laptop at the same time?

Comfortably. A 32-inch TV and a laptop together typically stay under 200 watts, leaving 600 watts of headroom for a blender, small vacuum or lighting. Anything with a big start-up spike gets a one-second window up to 1600 watts.
