Does a 15-year design life mean Leoch covers the battery for 15 years?
No. Design life is Leoch's estimate of how long the PLX12-540 will serve on float at 25°C, an engineering figure published on the datasheet. The warranty is 60 months, full replacement, and it is the only period Leoch commits to in writing. The gap is normal for a standby battery of this class. Hold the room near 25°C, float at 2.27 volts per cell, and the design life is achievable; run it hotter and the years come off the design life first. Warranty terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.
Why does the discharge table show 560 watts per cell when the part is rated 540?
The part number carries Leoch's nominal 15-minute rating, 540 watts per cell to 1.67 volts. The constant power discharge table on the same sheet lists 560 watts per cell in the 15-minute column. Datasheet tables are measured values and a rating is a round commitment, so the table sitting above the rating is the direction you want. Size the string on the 540 figure that Leoch stands behind and treat the extra 20 watts per cell as margin. If a UPS manufacturer's runtime table is built on watts per cell at 1.67 volts, the 540 figure drops straight into it.
How do the PLX12-500, PLX12-540 and PLX12-620 differ if the case is the same?
Plate count and rating. All three are 340.9 by 170 mm and 275.7 mm tall with M6 terminals, so they interchange physically. The PLX12-500 gives 500 watts per cell and 125 Ah at 41.7 kg; the PLX12-540 gives 540 watts and 135 Ah at 43.5 kg; the PLX12-620 gives 620 watts and 145 Ah at 44 kg. Weight rises with the amount of lead. Pick by the runtime the UPS needs at full load, and do not mix the three in one string: the lighter block reaches its end voltage first and the string is only as good as that block.
The battery room hits 40°C in summer. Is that inside the ratings?
Inside the discharge and charge windows, yes: Leoch rates discharge from -40°C to 65°C and charging from -20°C to 54°C, and at 40°C the sheet shows 103 percent of rated capacity. Ratings and longevity are different questions. Design life is quoted at 25°C, and heat above that shortens a lead acid battery's float life on every manufacturer's sheet. A charger with temperature compensation at -3 millivolts per cell per degree, as the datasheet specifies, protects the plates from overcharge in a hot room. If the room runs warm year round, tell the specialist; it affects how the replacement interval is planned.
