Is the warranty 60 months or 15 years?
60 months. Leoch warrants the PLX12-420 for 60 months with full replacement. The 15 years is the design life Leoch publishes on the datasheet, an estimate of float service at 25°C, and it is not a period during which anyone replaces a failed battery. Both figures appear on this page, always labeled, because a listing that runs them together is how a buyer ends up believing in a 15-year warranty. Terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.
What does the 420 in PLX12-420 stand for?
Watts per cell over a 15-minute discharge to 1.67 volts per cell at 25°C. Leoch names every PLX part by this rating rather than by amp hours, because the range exists for UPS duty and a UPS is sized on power over minutes. A 12 volt battery has six cells, so the PLX12-420 delivers about 2,520 watts for 15 minutes. The amp hour figure, 100 Ah at the 10-hour rate, is on the sheet as well and is the number to use if the block is ever asked to run a long, light load instead.
How does 100 Ah translate into UPS runtime?
Loosely, and the sheet's power table is the better tool. Amp hours are measured over 10 hours at a low current; a UPS pulls its energy in minutes at a high current, and the usable capacity falls as the rate rises. That is why Leoch publishes the constant power table: at 15 minutes the PLX12-420 gives 420 watts per cell, at 30 minutes 283.4, at one hour 156.7. Multiply the watts per cell by six, then by the number of blocks in the string, and compare that against the load in watts at the runtime you need. A specialist will run the string calculation from the UPS model if you would rather not.
Can it replace a PLX12-405 or PLX12-460?
Often, with a check. Leoch's range summary lists the PLX12-405 at 306 by 168 mm and 210 mm total height, the PLX12-420 at 340.9 by 170 mm and 215.7 mm, and the PLX12-460 at 340.9 by 170 mm and 215.7 mm. The PLX12-460 shares this exact case and terminal, so a swap is physical like for like with a 40 watt per cell step down in rating, which a UPS runtime table will show. The PLX12-405 is 35 mm shorter in length and its tray may not accept the longer block. Send the existing part number and a photo of the tray, and the quote will state which swap holds and what the runtime change is.
