How Do I Extend the Life of My Razor Electric Scooter Battery Pack?

If you are reading this article, then more than likely you or someone you know is experiencing trouble trying to get more than a year or two out of their razor electric scooter battery set. This is actually a pretty common problem found not only in the entire electric scooter market, but also with motorcycles, classic cars, and mopeds. There are a few steps that I will explain in detail that if followed properly and consistently, can extend your razor scooter battery life to its full capacity of three to four years’ worth of use.

The first thing to remember about the razor electric scooter battery is that this battery does not have any memory affect. What this means, is that you do not have to run the scooter battery all the way down before you re-charge it. Contrary to popular belief, it is actually better that you charge up razor scooter batteries after every single use. Even if you or your children have used the scooter to half of its capacity (run time) it is recommended that you immediately put the battery on charge. The reason for constantly keeping your battery in a charged state is to avoid the buildup of sulfation inside the battery. Sulfation is the number one reason every lead acid rechargeable battery on the market dies pre-maturely. The process of sulfation begins to take place when the battery is left to sit in a discharged state for a period of time. Keeping your razor scooter battery in a constantly charged state will leave no opening for the process of sulfation to occur.

The second thing that should be taken into consideration when it comes to maximizing your razor scooter battery life is off-season storage. After talking to a large number of scooter owners in my area about the storage process for their scooters, I noticed one constant error. The error that these owners were making is that they never charged up their respective razor electric scooter battery packs once during the off-season. Believe it or not, every sealed lead acid battery (which is what the razor scooter battery is) will discharge itself at a natural rate when not in use. It typically takes a charged battery anywhere between 3 - 6 months to completely discharge itself. When the scooter is in storage for 4 or 5 months out of the year, it has the potential to discharge itself low enough for sulfation to begin building up on the internal plates of that battery and slowly kill the capacity of the battery. The best way to prevent this from happening is charging up your razor scooter battery once every three months that the scooter is not in service.

This concludes my discussion on the topic of how to extend the life of your razor scooter battery. Remember, these preventative measures will only work if you do them consistently throughout the use of the batteries. I hope that this article will enable you to get the maximum life and value out of your razor scooter batteries.
