How long will an SGC12-70 hold a 20 amp load?
A little under three hours to 1.75 volts per cell at 77°F. C&D's table gives 27.5 amps for two hours and 19.8 amps for three, so a steady 20 amp draw lands just inside the three-hour column. Use the end point your relay or charger trips at: at 1.90 volts per cell the same jar gives 24.2 amps for two hours and 17.3 for three, and a 20 amp load then falls closer to two and a half.
Does an SGC12-70 need watering or electrolyte checks?
No. It is a valve regulated AGM jar with the electrolyte held in the glass mat and gas recombination running above 99 percent, so C&D lists no electrolyte maintenance for the series and there is nothing to top up. Maintenance is connection checks, voltage and impedance readings, and keeping the float inside 13.5 to 13.8 VDC per unit. The absence of free electrolyte is also why a damaged case does not put acid on the cabinet floor.
Is there an SGC model between the 70 and the 90?
Yes. C&D's 2022 sheet lists an SGC 12-80 at 79.0 Ah on the same 8-hour basis, 66.6 lbs, 3,300 amps short circuit and 0.0040 ohms, in a 12.04 by 6.83 inch case. We do not carry a page for it. If the 70 comes up short on a sizing calculation and the 90 overshoots the rack, ask a specialist to price the 80 alongside the two.
Does an SGC12-70 bank need a dedicated battery room?
C&D states the SGC series can be used in rooms with normal ventilation, mounted on racks or in cabinets, and that a separate battery room is not required. That is what puts four jars in a relay house cabinet instead of a purpose-built room. Local electrical code and the site's own standard still govern, so confirm the installation with whoever signs off the substation drawings.
