Why does the smaller HR1290WFR carry a higher discharge current limit?
Because maximum discharge current is set by the terminal and the plate group, not by how much energy the block holds. CSB rates the HR1290WFR at 300 amps and this larger part at 225. The figures that do scale with size are the ones that describe sustained output: 123 watts per cell against 90.0, 928 amps of short circuit current against 836, and 8.2 milliohms of internal resistance against 9.9. Size a string on the watts column and check the discharge limit separately against your worst case inrush.
What does the 120 in the part number stand for?
A nominal watts-per-cell figure at the 15 minute rate. CSB's datasheet measures 123 watts per cell to 1.67 volts per cell at 25°C, so the label sits 2.50 percent under the block. That pattern holds across the whole HR range and it never runs the other way: the 1221W measures 25.0 against a 21 label, the 1224W measures 27.0 against 24, the 1251W measures 53.3 against 51, and the 1290W lands exactly on 90.0. Size from the datasheet column and the badge will not flatter the battery.
Can this replace a flooded or a general purpose block of the same amp hour rating?
Amp hours alone will mislead you here. A 30 Ah general purpose AGM is built to hand back its capacity over hours, while this plate design is built to hand back 738 watts in fifteen minutes and then sit on float for years. Swapping a high rate block in where a general purpose one sits costs nothing in performance. Going the other direction shortens the runtime you get at UPS discharge rates, often by a wide margin. Is the flame retardant case standard on this part?
Yes on this one. CSB's datasheet describes the base container as ABS to UL 94-HB with the 94-V0 flame retardant version available on request, while the CSB price list lists this part as HR 12120WFR and marks the FR case standard. That is not true everywhere in the range; the HR1224W, for instance, carries FR as a surcharged option. Where a submittal has to cite the container rating, ask a specialist to confirm it against the build in writing rather than quoting the base datasheet line.
