Where This Battery Is Used
- Three-phase UPS strings - 30 to 40 blocks in series behind a mid-sized UPS, sized on the 15-minute watts-per-cell figure.
- Data closets and small computer rooms - ride-through to generator transfer where the tray takes a 12-inch top-terminal block.
- Switchgear control power - trip and close duty on a maintained float, using the 1-minute rate.

Frequently Asked Questions
HR3500 or HR3500ET: which one do I order?
Same rating, different case and different term. The HR3500 has top terminals in a 12.01 by 6.56 by 8.24 inch case at 71.5 lbs and carries East Penn's 3-year top-terminal term. The HR3500ET puts the same 370 watts per cell in a 19.44 by 4.24 by 9.09 inch front-access case at 75.5 lbs and carries the 4-year front-access term. If the UPS cabinet was built for top-post blocks on a 12-inch tray, order the HR3500; if it uses narrow front-access shelves, order the ET.
How many HR3500 blocks does a 480V UPS string take?
Forty, at 12 volts each, which is the common configuration for a three-phase UPS with a 480V nominal DC bus. Some UPS designs use 32, 36 or 38 blocks, so confirm the block count from the UPS manual rather than assuming. At 71.5 lbs each a 40-block string is 2,860 lbs of battery, which is a freight and floor-loading figure worth having before the quote.
What does the HR3500 deliver at a 60-minute runtime?
130 watts per cell to 1.67 VPC, or 127 to 1.75 VPC, per East Penn's table. That is 780 watts per block for an hour, so a 40-block string supports roughly 31 kW for 60 minutes at 77°F before the string reaches end voltage. If your requirement is closer to an hour than to fifteen minutes, size from the 60-minute column and consider whether an amp-hour rated block like the Unigy I series is the better fit.
What if only one HR3500 in the string has failed?
Our practice is to replace a string as a set once it is more than a year or two into service. A new block in an aged string floats at a different point and ages faster to meet the others. If one block has failed early under warranty, replace it like for like; if the string is at mid-life, price the full set and a specialist will tell you which makes sense for the age of the string you have.
