Deka Unigy 12AVR170ET Battery - 12V 170Ah Front Access AGM
Warranty and Design Life
What Front Access Buys You
- 170 Ah at the 8-hour rate to 1.75 VPC - the telecom sizing basis. At the 1-hour rate the same battery delivers 108 amps; at the 20-hour rate, 9.4 amps.
- UL 1973 certified for energy storage and built to UL recognition requirements, meeting or exceeding IEEE recommended practices and designed to GR4228.
- Flame-retardant case, UL 94 V-0 with greater than 28% L.O.I., epoxy-sealed posts, and flame-arresting self-sealing valves that are 100% factory tested.

Where This Battery Is Used
- Central offices and -48V plant strings - the reserve that carries the site between utility loss and generator pickup.
- 19-inch and 23-inch relay racks - where the string is serviced without unracking it.
- Cable and broadband headends - larger cabinets where 170 Ah per string position is the sizing that fits.
- Switchgear and utility substation control - float service on a documented IEEE maintenance schedule.
- Large UPS plant - standby duty where a 10-year float design life beats a shorter swap cycle on total cost.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the warranty 4 years or 10 years?
Four. East Penn warrants the 12AVR170ET for 4 years full replacement under Form EPM 0985 Rev 4/12. Terms are confirmed in writing with your quote.
How is design life different from the warranty?
Design life is East Penn's engineering estimate of service years under ideal float at 77°F, which for the 12AVR170ET is 10 years. The warranty is the period East Penn will replace a failed battery, which is 4 years. The gap is normal across the industry and is not a catch. Design life is an engineering estimate; the warranty is what East Penn will replace.
Does the 12AVR170ET fit where a 12AVR100ET sits?
No. Both are front access Unigy I, but the 170ET is 22.17 inches long and 119 lbs against the 100ET's smaller footprint. Same family, different tray. Match length, width, height and weight against your rack before you order, and send us the tray dimensions if you are not certain.
What torque do the terminals take?
1/4"-20 threaded inserts, and East Penn publishes the value in the Unigy I installation and operating manual rather than on the flyer. Use the figure in that manual and a torque wrench set for it. Over-torquing a threaded lead insert strips it, and a stripped insert on a front-access battery means pulling the unit you bought this battery to avoid pulling.
Will this run at 90°F?
It will run, and it will not last 10 years. Every float life figure on this page is at 77°F, and VRLA life roughly halves for each sustained 8 to 10°C above that. If you know a site runs warm, tell us before you order and we will talk about whether a heat-tolerant line is the better buy.
