How much charging does a 5 watt panel really deliver?
Deltran does not publish an amp rating, so work from the physics: 5 watts at a nominal 12 volts is under half an amp in direct midday sun, and less in cloud, in winter, or through tinted glass. Over a day that is enough to cancel the standby drain of a parked vehicle, which is the job it is built for.
Do I need a separate charge controller?
No. The controller is built into the panel assembly, and it is what switches the output to float once the battery is full. Wiring an unregulated panel straight to a battery is how batteries get boiled dry over a summer; this unit avoids that.
Will it maintain a lithium battery?
Yes. Deltran lists LiFePO4 alongside flooded, AGM and gel lead-acid. The float behavior suits a lithium pack in storage, since the panel stops pushing once the battery is full rather than holding it at a high voltage.
What is the difference between the 021-1171 and the 021-1172?
The panel is the same 5 watt unit. The 021-1172 kit adds a handlebar bracket for motorcycles and an OBD-II lead that charges through the diagnostic port. The 021-1171 here is the windshield-mount version with a ring terminal lead, and it is the one we stock.
